The following MBC Discussion Paper was researched and prepared by the Medical Board staff for the April 1994 meeting of the Midwifery Implementation Committee Meeting (the 2nd og 7 6 hr meeting chaired by Dr. Joas, MBC member).

Physicians supervision was its topic and it explored possible way to interpret and define it for purposes of regulations. The pertinent part for the reader's reference are:

(1) Page One -- the information about the manner in which phys supervision has been legislated for Nurse Midwives and regulated by the Board of Registered Nurses

(2) Page 3, near bottom --the remark by Dr Grimes of San Francisco General Hospital in which he defines the ideal supervisory relationship between obstetricians and licensed community midwives as "A supervising physician shall provide risk-appropreate medical consultation".
