Community Midwife
Historian

Faith Gibson is community midwife providing non-medical, home-based (domiciliary) care since 1981. She is a nationally Certified Professional Midwife (#96050001) under the auspices of the North American Registry of Midwives. She is also a Licensed Midwife in the state of California (LM#41). She provides domiciliary maternity care under the religious exemptions clause (Sec.2063) of the California Medical Practices Act. Prior to her current practice she was employed for 18 years as a vocational nurse in the labor & delivery room, premie nursery & emergency room of acute-care hospitals. She has completed the academic curriculum for an associate of science in nursing.

Over the past 17 years a total of 196 families have received care under section 2063; 7 mothers risked out during pregnancy (twins, prematurity, IUGR, PIH); of the 196 who began labor at home, 178 experienced a normal spontaneous vaginal delivery (NSVD) at home; 17 transferred to Hospital where 17 delivered vaginally, including 6 forceps-assisted deliveries (attributable the excellent obstetrical skills of a user-friendly obstetrician), and one cesarean delivery 17 1/2 hrs after transfering to the hospital.

There have been no medical complications for mothers or babies born at home under her care as a non-medical midwife, nor complications among the transferred group for mothers or babies born at home under her care as a non-medical midwife, nor complications among the transferred group attributable to domiciliary care. Cesarean-section rate for mothers who began active labor at home is under 1% ; forceps rate is 4%. Two perinatal mortalities (1.5%) were attributed to cardiac hypoplasia (at 9 days) and SIDS (at 21 days). Four mothers required postpartum admission to the hospital for retained placenta. Recovery was uneventful. As required by law, she files birth certificates and so a mechanism of public scrutiny over care rendered by her exists, as the county registrars routinely report any bad outcome or unusual circumstance to the Medical Board for investigation. There have been no such complaints.
